Collaboration: Key to addressing systemic risk posed by natural disasters

Natural disasters such as storms, flooding and fires often have a massive financial and social impact on communities worldwide – in South Africa, the recent flash floods in Gauteng are a case in point. It is the poorest of the poor, however, who tend to pay the heaviest price and multi-party collaboration is now more crucial than ever in reducing risk and building resilience to such disasters, says Vanessa Otto-Mentz, head of group strategy at Santam.

2016 recap by President Tracy McLaughlin

It has been a privilege to have served as President of the Insurance Institute of Gauteng in 2016, in the year that we celebrated the 105-year anniversary of #YourIIG – a proud, vibrant and robust institute. The theme for 2016 is Honouring our Heritage: Challenging our Future. While we pay tribute to and acknowledge the contribution of those who have come before us, we continually challenge ourselves to build on that momentum and to question the relevance and sustainability of what we do.

Sluggish global growth and political risks increase uncertainty

Being part of the IIG – 2016 Rockstars

It is difficult to choose my favourite IIG event but I have to say the very first IIG 24-hour Spinathon experience is hard to beat. From challenging my MD to ride for 24 hours, to appearing (briefly) on Somizi’s TV show to staying awake for 24 hours to interacting with amazing people in our industry to my children meeting their hero Kagiso Rabada (Thanks Allianz!) and, most importantly, being able to say that we helped raise over R600 000 for deserving charities. This event was definitely a highlight on my calendar.

What a bumper line up they had of exciting and energetic speakers. We could not have chosen a better panel of speakers to close off the year.
