The Informer

The absolute need for special risk cover

The way you view risk is predetermined by your appetite for life. One with a dreary disposition will see it as a consequence of the big bad world and the other, happier individual, will view it as a function of universal balance where, on occasion, bad things happen to good people.

Meet Gerald Van Wyk, President of the IIG

Tell us a little about yourself, and your career so far in the insurance industry.

I started my insurance career more than a decade ago at M&F, and have also worked for Agisanang, Hollard and Santam before joining Discovery Insure two-and-a-half years ago. Although I hold a degree in risk management, like most of us in the industry I also ended up in insurance by 'accident'!

Philly, a global broker & the IIG

I was incredibly fortunate to attend the Gallagher Global Alliance Forum 2017 in Philadelphia in April, representing GIB Insurance Brokers.

Professional Insurance Ladies Association of Nigeria (PILA)

#YourIIG were approached by the Professional Insurance Ladies Association of Nigeria (PILA) to facilitate an engagement with the local industry while they were in South Africa for their conference.

The social observer

As we all know, the industry’s calendar is jam-packed with inaugural dinners, awards ceremonies, auctions, launches, brand reveals and other high-profile gatherings. I have counted 22 keynote events this year and counting.

Class of 2017 journey

On the 3rd of March, the IIG launched the start of the Class of 2017 at the Fulcrum offices. The atmosphere at first was slightly apprehensive, but one could feel the eagerness and ambition within the room.

Where in the world

IIG Past President: Michael Dash – On reflection, I would probably do it all over again….

I embarked on my journey in the insurance industry almost 30 years ago with very little knowledge of insurance or what I was letting myself in for. The senior insurance personnel spoke a very different language to what I was accustomed to, which led me to the stark realisation that if I wanted to progress or succeed, I would need to up my game and identify a mentor whom I could count on to share their time and impart their knowledge. I set about identifying senior knowledgeable insurance experts and established a rapport to tap into their wealth of knowledge.
