To post or not to post your holidays on Facebook


Did you know that in the United Kingdom, sharing your travel adventures on social media could result in your home insurance claims being rejected if your abode gets burgled whilst on holiday?

Some insurance companies claim that publicly sharing your travel plans on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other platforms is similar to leaving your home’s doors and windows wide open. If your privacy settings aren’t up to scratch, anyone could follow your every move, thieves included, these companies reckon. This goes against their policies’ Reasonable Care clause.

Whilst the above is not a trend in South Africa, insurance companies in the Rainbow Nation and anywhere else in Africa, are allowed to check your social media feeds if they suspect you are contravening their policies’ terms and conditions, or if they feel you may be lying about items being stolen.
